The One That Got Away... Almost!

This rescue was unlike any other! It’s standard practice for our team to capture seals in the net and move on to scan for more, confident the animal is safe for a few moments. But standard practice failed us today. We returned to an empty net. Shocked doesn't begin to describe how the team felt. But Ocean Conservation Namibia never gives up. A lost capture is not a lost cause. We immediately initiated a high-stakes search to find him again. It was critical we succeeded. When we recaptured him, we saw red fishing line was deeply embedded in his flesh. This painful line had to come out. We found him, we freed him, and we reminded ourselves that even in conservation, you have to expect the unexpected.
