Liberia is a coastal country in West Africa bordered by Sierra Leone, Guinea and Côte d’Ivoire, with the Atlantic Ocean to the south and west. Its capital Monrovia is the largest city and main port, where busy streets, seaside views and informal markets show the contrast between modern buildings and older neighborhoods.
Liberia was founded in the 19th century by formerly enslaved people from the United States and the Caribbean. Because of this history, its flag, political system and some place names resemble those of the USA. English is the official language, but many local languages such as Kpelle, Bassa and Grebo are widely spoken.
The country’s landscape ranges from mangrove covered coasts and long sandy beaches to dense tropical rainforests. These forests are home to rare animals including pygmy hippos and many species of monkeys and birds. The climate is hot and humid all year with a strong rainy season that can flood roads and turn red dirt streets into mud.
Liberia is rich in natural resources such as rubber, timber, iron ore and gold. Agriculture also plays an important role in daily life, with common crops like rice, cassava and palm oil. Markets and small family farms help feed both cities and rural communities.
The country went through two devastating civil wars from 1989 to 2003 that damaged infrastructure and forced many people to flee. Since then Liberia has held democratic elections and is slowly rebuilding, improving roads, schools and basic services step by step.
Football is a national passion, and former world star George Weah even served as president, showing how strongly sports influence culture and identity. Music, street food and church life are also central to social life in Monrovia and in smaller towns.
Today Liberia faces challenges such as poverty, unemployment and limited public services. Even so, its people are known for their hospitality, energy and determination to create better opportunities for the next generation.
