The state government announced financial incentives for families having a third and fourth child, saying the move is necessary because Andhra Pradesh’s birth rate has fallen sharply in recent years. Under the newly announced scheme, families in Andhra Pradesh will reportedly receive ₹30,000 for the birth of a third child and ₹40,000 for a fourth child. Naidu said the state is facing a demographic challenge because the fertility rate has dropped below replacement level, meaning fewer young people may be available in the future workforce. He described children as “national assets” and said governments now need to encourage population growth instead of population control. The Andhra Pradesh government is also planning additional benefits linked to children and education. Reports say the state may provide free education support for third children up to the age of 18, while expanding welfare schemes that give annual financial assistance for school-going children. The broader initiative has been described by officials as a “Children as Wealth” policy. Naidu explained that the policy shift comes from fears about an aging population in the future. Officials reportedly warned that by 2047, nearly one-fourth of Andhra Pradesh’s population could be elderly if birth rates continue falling.
