"Immense compassion for shooters": San Diego mourns after 3 victims killed in mosque shooting

The imam of the Islamic Center of San Diego on Monday condemned what he described as “unprecedented” levels of hate and intolerance following a deadly shooting at the mosque the day before, urging Americans to promote unity and compassion. Nine-year-old Odai Shanah, whose mother emigrated from war-torn Gaza and settled in Southern California two decades ago, was among dozens of children forced to huddle in classrooms when the deadly gunfire erupted at the mosque where they attend school. "I saw a bunch of bad stuff. Before I came, they were sitting on the floor doing (a) morning meeting and we all heard the gunshot(s) and we thought it was like a tree smacking the ground. Yeah, and then all of that happened," Shanah said. Sarah Elfeky, an internist who worships at the mosque, said she "had immense compassion,” adding, “what would make a 17 or 19-year-old want to give up on life and want to destroy a community?” Two teenage gunmen, 17 and 18 years old, opened fire outside the mosque shortly before noon, killing three men, including a security guard, before the suspects were later found dead in a nearby vehicle from what police said appeared to be self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
