Tulfo blasts call for Senate boycott, says military promotions in danger | DZMM TeleRadyo

Erwin Tulfo castigated Tuesday Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano’s call for fellow senators to boycott the Senate, saying they will still be paid their salaries while not working. “Nakakahiya po yan, i-boycott so hindi kami papasok. Paano naman ang sweldo? So hindi ka papasok, siniswelduhan ka naman. Saan ka makita naman ng ganoon sa democratic country? Pawis, dugo, luha ng mga kababayan natin, mga manggagawa sa civilian sector, professional, ordinary worker, pinapaswelduhan kami hindi kami papasok. Ang sarap naman ng buhay, di po ba? Nakakahiya. How can we do that?” he said. The minority senator said the Senate boycott has left the promotions of three military colonels hanging before they retire because the Commission on Appointments cannot convene. “Mayroon po tayong tatlong colonel na gustong-gusto maging general, na dadaan sa [Commission on Appointments]. Magre-retiro na lang po, hindi man lang matikman nila ang kanyang estrella hanggang sa mag-retire na lang sila. They deserve that because they served this country for a while. E gantimpala po natin sa kanila na ‘Okay, ito po pagiging ranggo mo magiging general ka na for serving our country, for defending our country.’” “E hindi ka papasok, paano yung CA? Magreretiro na lang yung 3 opisyal na yun na mga pobre na ganun na lang ranggo nila? Hindi na ma-promote?” Tulfo criticized majority senators who did not go to the session to show solidarity with Sen. Jinggoy Estrada who was jailed on plunder charges. Senate sessions are usually suspended when there is a flood or typhoon, not when a colleague is arrested, he said. “Saan sa rules o sa Constitution sinasabi na wag kang pumasok dahil may nakulong na isang tao na kasamahan namin? Wala akong makita.” Tulfo said Cayetano’s call that a boycott would show their independence against Malacanang rings hollow since the Palace is not dictating anything to the Senate. “Wala akong nakikita dinidiktahan kami ng Malacanang, nasinabihan kami ng Pangulo,” he said.
