आधुनिक उर्दू गजल के बेताज बादशाह डॉ. बशीर बद्र ने जब 91 वर्ष की उम्र में भोपाल में अपनी अंतिम सांस ली तो साहित्य की दुनिया में गहरा सन्नाटा पसर गया. उनके निधन पर शोक व्यक्त करते हुए मशहूर शायर और गीतकार जावेद अख्तर ने लिखा, 'बशीर बद्र के जाने से हमारी उर्दू जुबान थोड़ी और गरीब हो गई है.' मगर सच तो ये है कि सिर्फ उर्दू ही नहीं, पूरा हिंदुस्तान थोड़ा और गरीब हो गया है. क्योंकि बशीर बद्र जैसे लोग सिर्फ शेर नहीं कहते, वे समाज को इंसानियत से भी भर देते हैं. जब ऐसे लोग चले जाते हैं तो दुनिया खाली सूनी नहीं होती, बल्कि उसमें मोहब्बत, तकल्लुफ और मानवीयता थोड़ी सी घट जाती है. बता दें कि बशीर बद्र की खासियत यह है कि उन्होंने एक पूरे दौर को तमीज, तहजीब और इंसानियत सिखाई है.
