Video Description
A machine this size can look level and still cut badly so we’re levelling it properly. We are continuing the Megabore lathe setup by installing the heavy duty adjustable levelling feet that we machined in the previous episode. Before this lathe ever makes its first chip, it has to be sitting correctly. Levelling a large manual lathe is not just about making the bubble sit in the middle. The real goal is removing bed twist and ensuring the machine is sitting level across its full length. Even small deviations can affect accuracy, surface finish and tool life. We will begin by installing the shop made levelling feet and using a digital level to bring the machine to within 0.1 mm. From there the process will move to a precision machine level, where fine adjustments are made across the bed until it’s sitting level and the twist is fully removed. Once the lathe is level, the commissioning process can begin. The coolant tank system will be connected and tested, splash back panels installed, the chuck guard fitted and the motorised tailstock given a test run. The carriage feeds and rapids will also be checked to confirm everything is operating correctly. This is the moment the Megabore officially becomes a working machine in the shop. There is still plenty more to come. A heavy duty shop made tailstock chuck is next on the list along with future upgrades including a custom access platform, quick change tool post upgrade and relocating the digital readout.
