Tinu Yohannan is a former Indian cricketer known for his right-arm medium-fast bowling. He represented Kerala in domestic first-class cricket and holds the distinction of being the first cricketer from Kerala to play both Test and One Day International matches for India. During his playing career, he was recognized for his disciplined bowling and commitment on the field. After retiring from professional cricket, Yohannan transitioned into coaching, where he continues to contribute to the development of the sport. He currently serves as the head coach of the Kerala cricket team, focusing on nurturing young talent and strengthening the team’s performance at the domestic level. He reflects on his journey in cricket, beginning with childhood dreams of wearing the Indian jersey. Initially, he believed sport was only about performance, but over time he realized that sport is much deeper. He explains that true sporting excellence depends on three dimensions: the body, the mind, and the heart. While the body builds physical strength and technique, the mind develops confidence, discipline, and decision-making under pressure. However, the heart—representing character, passion, and intrinsic motivation—is what truly sustains long-term success. The speaker emphasizes that external rewards may inspire athletes initially, but lasting motivation must come from within. Managing emotions such as fear, anger, and excitement is also crucial for consistent performance. Ultimately, he concludes that sport is not just about records or victories; it is about personal growth, values, and identity. The real beauty of sport lies in developing both greatness and goodness together. Tinu Yohannan is a former Indian international cricketer and one of Kerala’s pioneering fast bowlers.
