The United Kingdom has a highly centralized education system, which is divided into four main stages: primary, secondary, further and higher education. Primary education starts at the age of five and lasts for seven years. All children must attend primary school, which is free of charge. The majority of primary schools are controlled by the local authority, although there are also a number of academies and free schools. Secondary education lasts for five years, from the age of eleven. Again, all children must attend secondary school, which is also free of charge. Secondary schools can be either academies, free schools, grammar schools or comprehensive schools. Further education generally refers to colleges and sixth forms, which offer a range of academic and vocational qualifications. Further education is not compulsory, but many young people choose to attend a college or sixth form after completing their GCSEs.
