Video Description
Taking the starkly different emotional responses people have towards dogs and pigs as her starting point, Liz explores how ‘selective empathy’ shapes the way people view animals and social issues. She points out that people tend to focus more readily on those who are familiar and close to them, whilst overlooking the plight of distant and unfamiliar groups. Her talk calls on everyone to step out of their comfort zones and open the ‘door to the unfamiliar’ in their hearts, so as to understand the world and the circumstances of others from a more objective and broader perspective. Student at Malvern College Qingdao This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
