What began with a brief skirmish in May 2025 escalated into the worst fighting between the two countries in more than a decade, displacing hundreds of thousands of people and reviving nationalist tensions on both sides of the border. But this conflict is about more than territory. It is rooted in colonial-era borders, contested cultural heritage, domestic political struggles, and historical grievances that were never fully resolved.
