China's AI Data Centers Find Home on Grasslands of Inner Mongolia

Northern China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, with its cool climate and rich natural resources, is drawing tech companies to build data centers that can be powered by clean energy. Ulanqab city is an example. Despite having fewer than two million inhabitants, the city is home to 89 data centers. At the center operated by the ZDATA group, emergency training drills are taking place. To maintain power for centers like this one and more, local authorities and the State Grid are building a dedicated power station for the data centers. Last year renewable electricity accounted for 60 percent of China's installed power generation capacity, exceeding the total consumption of the EU's 27 member states.
