Video Description
April 20th is Chinese Language Day, an annual observance established by the United Nations to celebrate multilingualism, cultural diversity, and honor the Chinese language, which is one of the oldest written languages in the world. Word of gold in California spread all over the world by 1849. By 1851, over 25,000 Chinese immigrants came to California, a land that many Chinese people called “Gam (Jin) Saan,” or “Gold Mountain.” San Francisco was the first city many Chinese immigrants arrived to by ship, so it became known as “First City.” Passengers would leave ocean vessels in San Francisco and board smaller steamboats bound for Sacramento, the Second City. In honor of Chinese Language Day, Jared letterpress printed a photo engraving that says “Gam (Jin) Saan Yee Fow” (Gold Mountain Second City), which is what Sacramento was called in the early 1850s by Chinese immigrants who came to California for the Gold Rush. This cut was made many years ago for our print shop to make flyers to promote a previous exhibit at the Sacramento History Museum. This was printed with orange oil base ink using our Washington hand press. #ChineseLanguageDay #chineselanguage #chinesehistory #chinese #cantonese #typography #SacHistoryMuseum #sacramento #museum #history #letterpress #printingpress #asmr #printing #printmaking #oldsacramento #ytshorts #youtubeshorts #youtube #shorts #shortvideo
