Video Description
Original Video Credit: IG/flordracing Several late 1970s and early 1980s vehicles used decorative wheel overlays designed to imitate expensive cast alloy rims. Instead of machining the entire wheel from aluminum, manufacturers bonded molded polyurethane covers onto standard steel wheels to achieve the same upscale appearance at a lower cost. The flexible material allowed designers to create highly detailed honeycomb and mesh patterns that would have been far more expensive to manufacture in real metal. Over time, many owners were surprised to discover the โ€œmetalโ€ spokes could actually bend or squish under pressure. GM used this style on vehicles like the Camaro Berlinetta and other luxury trim packages during an era when automakers were heavily experimenting with lightweight styling materials, faux finishes, and futuristic dashboard designs.
