A female Himalayan Flameback (Dinopium shorii), also known as the Himalayan Goldenback, perched on a moss-covered branch in the lush forests of Pampadum Shola National Park. This striking woodpecker is instantly recognizable by its brilliant golden-orange back and wings, which create a vivid contrast against the green forest canopy. The bird displays a distinctive black-and-white facial pattern and a black crown marked with white spots, identifying it as a female; males typically possess a bright red crest. Perched vertically on the branch, it exhibits the classic woodpecker posture used while searching for insects hidden beneath bark and within decaying wood. The dense, misty forest habitat of the Western Ghats provides an ideal environment for this beautiful species, supporting a rich diversity of insects and native vegetation.
