Mendelssohn's Fifth Symphony, nicknamed "Reformation," is one of his most historically charged works. Written in 1830 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession, it draws on the rich tradition of Lutheran church music: the first movement quotes the Catholic "Dresden Amen," while the finale builds to a sweeping, triumphant treatment of Luther's famous chorale Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott ("A Mighty Fortress Is Our God"). Interestingly, despite being the fifth in numbering, it was actually composed before several of his other symphonies — Mendelssohn himself was dissatisfied with it and withheld it from publication, so it was only performed posthumously in 1868. The work stands apart from the rest of his symphonic output for its explicitly theological program and its almost oratorio-like solemnity, making it a fascinating window into Mendelssohn's deep engagement with his Lutheran heritage.
Born Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in 1809, Felix Mendelssohn is one of the most significant composers of the romantic period, managing perhaps more than anyone else to marry the expressive impulses of the era with the form and control of the classical period. His most famous works include his Symphonies No.s 3, 4, and 5 (the “Scottish” in A minor, “Italian” in A major, and “Reformation” in D major/minor), the A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Elijah, and Hebrides overtures, Violin Concerto in E minor, and his Songs Without Words for solo piano. On top of his fame as a composer, Mendelssohn was a celebrated performer of both the piano and organ, and through his performance of others’ works, he notably contributed to the rediscovery and revival of past composers, including most notably Bach and Schubert. He was also the grandson of the famous Jewish philosopher, Moses Mendelssohn.
