Video Description
Seized solid and no parts available…these CAT 24M grader accumulators will either be saved on the lathe or end up scrap! We’ve got a pair of hydraulic accumulators from the braking system of Caterpillars biggest motor grader, the 24M, in our workshop. The end caps have seized and are locked solid in the ends of the barrels, and with no replacement parts available we really need this repair to be a success. With the first accumulator set up in the lathe it’s time to begin machining out the cap. We start with a 90mm BPK spade drill to clear most of the cap before carefully boring out the rest. With just a thin layer of the cap left, it finally peels free but the next problem is the damaged, galled threads that could lock up an end cap again. Precision thread chasing will decide if this barrel survives. Not only that, we have to repeat the process on the second accumulator to see if we can save that as well! Both barrels come out good in the end so we can get the pistons out, give the parts a quick run through the hotwash and next we will need make brand new end caps in Part 2!
