Video Description
India has recently seen another round of milk price increases, with major dairy brands like Amul and Mother Dairy raising prices by about ₹2 per litre across several milk variants. The hikes affect commonly used products such as toned milk, full cream milk, cow milk, and buffalo milk, directly impacting household budgets because milk is one of the most regularly consumed essentials in India. The dairy companies say the increases are necessary because production costs have risen sharply over the past year. According to statements from the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets the Amul brand, costs linked to cattle feed, transportation, packaging film, fuel, and procurement payments to farmers have all gone up significantly. Mother Dairy similarly argued that it has been paying farmers substantially more for milk procurement and that only part of those costs are being passed on to consumers. However, the timing of the price hike has created political controversy because it comes amid broader inflation concerns in India. Fuel prices have also recently increased, and economists warn that rising fuel and milk costs together could push retail inflation higher in the coming months. Since milk is a daily necessity for tea, sweets, breakfast, and children’s nutrition, even a ₹2 increase is felt immediately by middle-class and lower-income households. The controversy also reflects a larger economic reality in India today: even relatively small increases in staple goods like milk can become major political issues because they affect nearly every household on a daily basis.
