Hyderabad's Chanchalguda Central Jail has launched a unique initiative for those who have always dreamed of going to prison. Now, ordinary citizens can experience life behind bars without having committed any crime. To facilitate this, the jail administration has introduced a special program titled ‘Feel the Jail,’ under which individuals can voluntarily stay in the prison for a duration ranging from 12 to 24 hours. Under this prison tourism initiative, those curious about what it is like to be incarcerated—or those simply wishing to experience prison life firsthand—can get a taste of it by paying ₹2,000 for a 24-hour ‘jail experience’ or ₹1,000 for a 12-hour stay. Visitors participating in this program will be accommodated in specially designated prison cells. They will be served the exact same food provided to the inmates and will be required to adhere to the daily routine just like the prisoners. This means that waking up, meal times, the lock-up process, and all other daily activities will unfold in precisely the same manner as they do for actual inmates. This is not the first attempt to promote prison tourism in Hyderabad; approximately five years ago, the ‘Feel the Jail’ program was similarly launched at the 222-year-old Sangareddy Jail. The objective of these initiatives is to provide the general public with an authentic experience of prison life and to familiarize them with the history and operational systems of correctional facilities.
