Video Description
Step onto one of the most complete medieval city walls in Europe and walk through nearly 2,000 years of history in York. In this walking tour, we explore the incredible story of the York City Walls, from Roman fortress defences to the medieval stone walls that still circle the city today. As an American living in Britain, I’m constantly amazed that you can simply stroll along fortifications that have defended this city since the days of the Roman Empire. York’s walls aren’t just old… they are layered history, rebuilt, expanded, and reshaped by Romans, Vikings, medieval kings, and even the Victorians. Along the walk we explore: • How the Romans first fortified York (Eboracum) nearly 2,000 years ago • Why the medieval walls replaced Roman defenses in the 1200s • The role the walls played during wars, rebellions, and medieval city life • The history behind York’s famous gates (called “Bars”) like Micklegate Bar and Bootham Bar • How the walls helped control trade, taxes, and who could enter the city • The surprising ways the walls survived demolition in the 1800s when many English cities tore theirs down We’ll also walk past some of York’s most famous landmarks along the route and talk about the moments in history that happened right beneath these stones. York is one of the very few cities in England where you can still walk almost the entire circuit of medieval walls, and doing so reveals just how important this city was for centuries. If you love British history, medieval architecture, and hidden stories inside ancient cities, you’re going to enjoy this walk. ?
