Bosnia and Herzegovina confronts Croatia over nuclear waste facility

The Una River, one of Europe’s cleanest and most breathtaking waterways is at the centre of a growing regional dispute. Croatia’s plan to establish a radioactive waste disposal site near its border with Bosnia has triggered outrage among environmental activists, local communities, and officials in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In this episode, Across The Balkans examines the case and speaks with lawyer Nemanja Galic who is the legal counsel to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Eight years after the Chinese mining giant Zijin Mining Group arrived in Bor, eastern Serbia, companies within the group have become some of the country’s biggest exporters. The investment has brought new jobs and higher living standards to this mining town. But as production expands and exploration spreads into nearby areas, concerns about air pollution persist, and some residents living near the open pits are still awaiting relocation. High above the city of Gjirokaster, a 12th century fortress still watches over centuries of history. But deep below the cobbled streets, another story is being uncovered. Inside an old Communist era tunnel, once built as a Cold War shelter, thousands of forgotten objects have been given new life in a museum of memory and nostalgia. What was once a place of fear has become a powerful journey through time, preserving the everyday lives of generations that risk being forgotten.
