Cast Iron Weld Repair on a Vintage Huron Slotting Attachment | Part 2

We’re attempting a cast iron weld repair on a cracked vintage Huron slotting attachment, but a major development changes the direction of the rebuild! A second slotting attachment has come in from Butcher Machine Tools as a possible source of spare parts. Once disassembled, it quickly becomes clear it’s in near perfect condition. That unit earns its place in the workshop and the one we'll be keeping. The original damaged attachment, however, still deserves saving so we can find it a new home. To give it a second life, Kurtis tackles a challenging cast iron repair. The cracked housing is prepped and TIG welded using silicon bronze, but the job doesn’t go smoothly. Missing filler rods, improvised solutions, and a TIG welder that won’t hold stable heat all make this repair more involved than expected. Tracking down the fault inside the welder becomes part of the job, and it turns out it’s going to need replacing. Once the housing is welded, it’s machined back to size on the mill using an adjustable boring head to bring everything back to spec. With the repair complete, the original slotting attachment is now on track to be rebuilt and re-homed instead of being scrapped.
