Former foreign minister Alexander Downer warns Australia’s defence capability is slipping, pointing to a new report revealing an $86 billion funding shortfall. “The defence budget is being cannibalised … our defence capabilities today are gradually declining,” Mr Downer told Sky News host Steve Price. “We were unable to send a warship to the Strait of Hormuz because our ships wouldn’t be able to defend themselves from Iranian drones and missiles. “That reflects the weakness of our defence force, where we haven’t invested.”
