Video Description
Included in the Schedule 1 of the Indian Wildlife Protection Act, and thus due to be accorded the highest level of protection is this Cheer Pheasant as it looks fabulous with warm evening sun on the Chaukhamba Himalayan range peak, and among the grasslands of upper Garhwal. Cheer Pheasant or bhoincheel calls out in its exquisite voice in the Kumaon Himalaya | Rare Himalayan Bird Sighting with a backdrop of the Chaukhamba range and nearby peaks. The sound of a conch shell or shankh can be heard nearby. A rare sight unfolds near a rocky ridge in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand—a Cheer Pheasant (Catreus wallichii) standing alert on rocky terrain scattered with dry, brown grass. Its pale, sandy plumage blends naturally with the rugged Himalayan hillside, providing effective camouflage against predators. The immediate foreground is characterized by loose stones, sparse alpine vegetation, and wind-swept grass typical of high-altitude slopes. Beyond the ridge, prominent snow-capped Himalayan peaks emerge through a light atmospheric haze, creating a dramatic and expansive mountain backdrop. The Cheer Pheasant prefers open grassy slopes and scrub habitats rather than dense forests, making such ridge-top terrain ideal. Classified as vulnerable, this Himalayan endemic species faces habitat pressures but continues to survive in protected and less disturbed mountain ecosystems. The setting combines spiritual elevation and ecological richness—where a sacred Himalayan temple landscape also supports rare and specialized high-altitude birdlife.
