Video Description
The Civil Defense released video on Thursday showing the moment Kuwait International Airport was hit by a suspected Iranian drone.
Footage shows a large explosion as the drone made impact as well as damage inside and around the terminal.
Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry said the attack targeted vital and civilian facilities, including Kuwait International Airport, killing one person and injuring others, while also damaging critical infrastructure and diplomatic missions.
Kuwait’s Ministry of Health said 63 people were injured, some of them seriously. The attack led to a temporary suspension of flights, with incoming aircraft diverted before operations later resumed.
Iran denied targeting the airport. Brigadier General Hossein Mohebi, a spokesperson for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said the damage at the passenger terminal was caused by a malfunctioning US-made Patriot interceptor, not an Iranian strike.
"The IRGC Aerospace Forces did not launch any missile toward this target, and the destruction of the Kuwait airport passenger terminal was the result of a malfunction in the US Patriot systems, which fell on the terminal after failing to intercept Iranian missiles," he said.
Iranian media Tasnim also quoted a military 'source' claiming the images were 'a fabricated scene' - and saying that Iranian attacks were at midnight under total darkness, which would be at odds with the bright daytime footage.
Kuwait later summoned Iran’s charge d’affaires and handed him an official protest note over the attacks. The Foreign Ministry also announced a reduction in Iranian embassy staff and declared two members of the Iranian diplomatic mission persona non grata.
The attack drew condemnation from Gulf and Arab states, including the UAE, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and Jordan, which described the strikes as a violation of Kuwait’s sovereignty.
The escalation followed an IRGC announcement that it had launched a military response after a US strike on an Iranian-linked oil tanker near the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian media said the attacks targeted the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet and an airbase in the Gulf.
US Central Command denied that Iranian strikes had hit the Fifth Fleet headquarters or other US military targets. CENTCOM said Iranian missiles fired towards Kuwait and Bahrain either fell short, broke apart or were intercepted by US and partner air defences.
The developments came amid continuing tension between Iran and the United States, despite a ceasefire that came into effect on April 8. Talks between the two sides have continued, but have yet to produce a wider settlement.
