Printing the name of Sacramento’s first newspaper published on April 28, 1849

On April 28, 1849, Sacramento’s first newspaper, the Placer Times, published its first edition in a small adobe building near the corner of 28th and K Streets, just east of Sutter’s Fort. Edward Kemble was the newspaper’s editor and was the former editor of the Alta California newspaper in San Francisco. The newspaper was printed weekly with the former wooden common press used to print the Californian newspaper in Monterey in 1846, the first newspaper in California. Kemble stepped down as editor of the Placer Times in June 1849 and T.R. Per Lee became the editor. It was not long before Per Lee moved the printing office to Front Street in November 1849. The Placer Times moved to the east side of Second Street between K and L Streets the next month. The Placer Times merged with the Sacramento Transcript in June 1851 after both struggled to compete separately against the emerging new newspaper in the city, The Daily Union.
