Built in the early 14th century, the village boasts more than 700 years of history, still visible today in its fortified gates, ancient ramparts, narrow cobbled streets, and its imposing medieval castle. The History of Yvoire Castle Constructed from 1306 under the orders of Count Amédée V of Savoy, the Castle of Yvoire was built to monitor lake navigation and control the strategic route linking Geneva to the Upper Rhône Valley and Italy. Throughout the centuries, Yvoire stood at the center of numerous strategic and religious conflicts involving French forces, Bernese troops, Genevans, and the noble houses of Savoy, Faucigny, and Dauphiné. In 1591, a devastating fire damaged the castle, which only regained its current appearance in the 20th century, thanks to restoration work led by Félix Bouvier d’Yvoire, including the roof and corner watchtowers. The Mystery of Yvoire The castle remains closed to the public.
