Indian film critic and journalist Mayank Sharma discusses the qualities that traditionally defined a Bollywood hero. Using Jackie Shroff as an example, he reflects on the impact of natural screen presence, distinctive looks, and the aura created by a fresh face unfamiliar to audiences. He contrasts this with contemporary film culture, where actors often undergo extensive physical training and formal performance coaching. The discussion highlights how charisma, individuality, and effective screen projection have historically contributed to star-making in Indian cinema.
Indian film critic and journalist Mayank Sharma said:
“As far as heroes are concerned, when Jackie Shroff was young, it was difficult to find many people who were as good-looking as he was. He could create a certain aura purely through his looks.
If you cast someone in a film whom audiences have never seen before, and present them effectively, that freshness can be very powerful. Today, this may sound old-fashioned because everyone works on their physique. Everyone wants a six-pack. Everyone dances well. People learn the emotional and dramatic style associated with Bollywood acting by attending one acting school or another.
But there is something unique about the freshness of a face that the audience has never seen before. If that person is shaped and projected correctly, that is pretty much what a hero used to be.”
