An Indian Red Admiral butterfly (Vanessa indica) basking with its wings fully spread in Motidhar, Mussoorie, Uttarakhand, India. The butterfly displays bold orange-red bands across its dark forewings along with distinct white spots near the wing tips. Its hindwings are bordered with darker margins decorated by tiny blue-scaled markings and black spots. The insect’s dark hairy thorax, slender abdomen, and long antennae with pale tips are also clearly visible. The Indian Red Admiral is a fast-flying nymphalid butterfly commonly found in Himalayan forests, hill stations, woodland edges, and mountain gardens. Like many butterflies, it often basks in sunlight to regulate body temperature before flight activity.
