Tomohon, North Sulawesi: Volcano Hikes, Hidden Gems & Geothermal Energy

From Gorontalo to Tomohon in North Sulawesi, this leg of my Sabang to Merauke journey takes me deep into one of Indonesia’s most fascinating regions — riding the coast, exploring hidden gems, visiting a geothermal power plant, and hiking the active Mount Lokon volcano. 🌋🏍️ In this episode of my Sabang to Merauke adventure, I enter my 17th province — North Sulawesi. The ride takes me from the coastal roads into rugged mountains, where I arrive in Nuangan, the hometown of Indonesian singer Novia Bachmid. Her family welcomes me, and I even try riding a traditional roda sapi (cow cart) for the first time! 🐂 From there, I continue to Tomohon, a city surrounded by volcanoes and rich in culture, nature, and sustainability. I get an exclusive tour of Pertamina’s geothermal energy plant, learning how volcanic steam is turned into clean, renewable power. We also stop by an arenga sugar farm, where steam replaces firewood — a greener way to keep traditions alive. ⚡🌱 The adventure continues at a black crested macaque rehabilitation center, protecting this endangered monkey that’s still hunted in parts of North Sulawesi. 🐒 Finally, we hike Mount Lokon in Tomohon with the PGE Lahendong team and a few subscribers.
